Chair of Pediatrics - Geisinger - Janet Weis Children's Hospital
He is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine. He is board certified in pediatric critical care medicine and pediatric emergency medicine.
Dr. Maffei received his medical degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine at Yeshiva University in New York and graduated with AOA honors. He completed his residency and chief residency at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. He remained at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh where he completed a fellowship in pediatric emergency medicine in 1998. He completed a second fellowship in pediatric critical care at Golisano Children’s Hospital at the University of Rochester in 2001. He was selected to be the University of Rochester Medical School Lowell A. Glasgow Dean’s Teaching Fellow in 2003. He has been the recipient of numerous teaching and clinical awards.
Dr. Maffei has been the Director of Pediatric Critical Care Unit since 2009 and currently serves as the Division Chief of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine. In 2014, he became the Vice Chair of Pediatrics and Interim Chair in the Department of Pediatrics, August 2016. After a national chair search, he was named the Chair of Pediatrics in April 2017.
Active in education and clinical research, Dr. Maffei is an editor of the textbook Pediatric Critical Care: Text and Study Guide. He will again serve as an editor of this highly commended textbook’s second edition. Chapters from the first edition have been downloaded over 150,000 times worldwide, and the text serves as the primary clinical resource and board preparation guide for numerous pediatric critical care fellowships. Dr. Maffei has also co-authored numerous abstracts, manuscripts and chapters in clinically relevant areas including life-threatening asthma, meningitis, sepsis, child abuse and critical care technologies. He has given numerous invited presentations and is the currently the Subspecialty Liaison for the Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics.
Dr. Maffei’s areas of current areas of interests include increasing health care access to vulnerable pediatric populations, child abuse prevention, biomarkers in critical illness, sepsis, and traumatic brain injury
