Dr. Steve Garske is a healthcare technology leader with over 15 years of Chief Information Officer experience and over 25+ years of technical experience. Steve rejoined Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) in 2016 to serve as Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer (CIO) for a second time. Steve leads a team of over 250 technical associates, physicians, and nurses with an annual budget of over $112M. Among their accomplishments, Steve and his team have restructured IT management and suppliers, producing an annual savings of over $3M. Previously, Steve and his team insourced all IT services and functions, saving CHLA $79M in IT expenses. The CHLA team also created a strategic 3-year roadmap for all IT departments and have set records for the number of innovative projects underway and completed. Previously, Steve served as CIO for Verity Health System (VHS) and CIO and CTO of Kootenai Health (KH). At VHS, he led the development of a multimillion-dollar health system-wide IT remediation plan, and at KH, his team won many awards, including the IT Most Wired Innovators Award (2013), the IT Healthcare News Best IT Department in the U.S. (2014), and the Most Wired Hospital (2015) distinction. Steve and his CHLA team have won multiple awards including 2017 Best IT Department, multiple Most Wired Awards, CIO of the Year award, Future Edge Award, and the CIO 100 Innovation Award.
Steve holds a Bachelor’s degree in Applied Mathematics, Scientific Programming from the University of California, San Diego, a Master’s of Science degree in Business Information Technology from Kingston University, London (UK), a PhD in Applied Management Decision Sciences, Information Systems Management from Walden University, and a Master’s of Business Administration from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
