Joel Nelson is Vice President of Innovation for UnitedHealthcare, a $180 billion revenue division of UnitedHealth Group (NYSE: UNH). UnitedHealthcare, along with its sister company Optum and the capabilities of their parent company UnitedHealth Group, delivers health services to over 140 million unique individuals across all 50 states in the US and over 130 countries globally, making UnitedHealth Group one of the largest health care platforms in the world. Joel reports to the SVP of business development and strategy for UnitedHealthcare and leads innovation efforts that span across the lines of business. His innovation team is responsible for accelerating the mission of UnitedHealthcare; to help people live healthier lives and to make the health system work better for everyone. The innovation team has priorities across the platform including launching new care delivery models, driving better member experiences through technology, and solving for social determinants of health for our members. Joel also supports innovation efforts across the enterprise and healthcare ecosystem and is a co-founder of the UnitedHealthcare Accelerator Powered by Techstars.
Joel brings a diverse consumer-centric innovation background to UnitedHealth Group, with prior ventures in retail, financial services, automotive, consumer electronics, and small business ownership. He remains active in the startup community as an advisor, mentor and angel investor.
Joel holds a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Utah as well as a Bachelor’s in Finance from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
